A crazy rise in the standings, a free program breathtaking. The Skater from Valais scored in the minds of the European Championships for his great return to competition. He leaves Tallinn with a silver medal around his neck as a talisman: he can now claim the gold medal.

It's not big the size of a 5-franc piece. But it means a lot. The silver medal of the European Championships in Tallin, Stéphane Lambiel keep it preciously, although warm at the bottom of the pocket of his jacket, then he offered a ride to Taani Kuninga aed, the Garden of Kings covered with a thick mantle of snow.
It's noon this Saturday, January 23. Along the Baltic Sea, the air is frigid, biting. For a week, the thermometer isn't pressed over the bar - 20ºC. The newspapers of the Estonian capital devoted full pages to the historical temperatures. Stéphane smiled: "Every Day I go out, I feel the intense cold, I draw my energy." He radiates. Along the way he speaks in Vancouver. The games are so close (the men's short program is scheduled February 16, 18 free).
"I hope I have time to go watch a hockey game," says Stéphane. It would be great also to be able to go to skiing one day. I'm especially pleased to be able to celebrate with the other Swiss athletes their medals."
It might well be his, which will be celebrated next month in Canada.
Incredible recovery

For now everything seems possible after the podium at the Europeans, which marks his comeback to competition after a break of more than one year. Above all, this Thursday night, January 21 at the Saku Suurhall in Tallinn, in spite of Evgeni Plushenko, untouchable, it was Stéphane Lambiel that has marked the spirits. "Only" fifth in the short program on Wednesday, the Swiss of 24 years will be the author of an incredible rise in the free end to snatch a silver medal. Unexpected.
"Stéphane had rabies", said Peter Grutter, his coach forever, while his protege is on the podium. The medal, he went to look deep within himself, transcended by La Traviata, the joyous air, festive, with no waltz that he likes so much. Four and a half minutes of grace, intense emotion, which ignited a rink yet gained any Russian Plushenko, who came close. For him the public remains fascinated by the technical perfection of the Czar, with Stéphane is to vibrate.
"People come to see a show than a skating competition", said Stéphane. "You must express your feelings, who you are. Skating is more than a sport."

"The mark of Stephane is the artistic, spins, steps," confirms former French champion Philippe Candeloro. He said: "But here, he proved he could go fight." For too mention the artist and his extreme sensitivity, we come to forget that the Valais is a true competitor, tenacious A monster of will. An oversight that strikes even their closest entourage. "Before the short program, we wanted to protect him too, acknowledges Peter Grütter. It was a mistake. He did not need. Stéphane is strong. "However, fears were not unfounded. The skater admits he no persistent groin pain, worn by the duplication of efforts, weakened by the intensity of training?  An injury that initially, in October 2008, was forced to stop racing.

The top athlete it has not been able to go long the adrenaline of the competition, one that only grows to exceed its limits, to always go further. The gala will never taste the big leagues. And the Olympics approaching ... In July of last year, Stéphane Lambiel announced his return. But he continues to feel pain. The pain did not leave anymore. They reappear even more acute. He learns to live with them, manage them. He spends many hours in the physio. His workouts become rituals, made of long warm-up, ointment and ice bags. "I must be careful every time I walk on the ice," says he.

The champion is suffering, he fought. He won't give up. It is a Lambiel. "In my family we used to being pushed to do better than what we can," insists the son of Jacques, solid wrestler d'Isere, and Fernande, came from Portugal, whose dedication is now part of the legend. When Stéphane was a child, he ate well, for five years, 1200 miles every week between Saxon and Geneva to bring his son to training. The start always set between 4 and 5 o'clock, the boy still in pajamas, with his pillow and blanket, sleeping up to Nyon, then turns and eats his cornflakes in the car. Perseverance who invents a character, a will to win.

Then, of course, Tallinn Stéphane Lambiel wanted to be European champion, a coronation is missing his belt already rich titles including two world championship (in 2005 Moscow and 2006 in Calgary) and Olympic silver in Turin. "It is not gold but a medal," he smiles confidently. He and his team know he still has room for improvement here in Vancouver. In Estonia, the free program was marred by two mistakes: a combination of incomplete and a fall on a sequence of steps. At the Games, if he does not want ..." Peter Grütter still breath, the malicious eye.  He knows now that his athlete will play the Olympic gold.

The cold is unbearable Saturday morning in January. On snowy sidewalks, Stéphane Lambiel improvises a few a run for warmth, along with the faithful Majda Scharl, his physical preparation. The young man is having fun. He likes to say he is "a skater, not an adult. However, he has perhaps never been as determined, confident. He knows that many have doubted his chances of returning to the highest level. He is aware that some did not understand his choice, his doubts. "Everybody follows his way, Stéphane answers. Mine is like that. "Back at the hotel, he pulls out a medal last time. It 's not  big. But she says the Little Prince is back.
